Ingredients

  • To create your air fryer tofu dish, you will need the following ingredients:
  • 1 - block 16 oz
  • 2 - tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 - tsp garlic powder
  • 1 - tbsp sesame oil new addition for added flavor
  • 2 - tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 1.5 - tbsp soy sauce can substitute with low sodium or tamari for gluten-free
  • 3 - cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 - tsp ginger paste
  • 2 - tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 - tbsp water
  • 1 - tsp sesame seeds for garnish
  • - Diced green onions for garnish
  • - Fresh cilantro, chopped optional garnish

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu
  1. Slice your prepped extra-firm tofu into 1-inch cubes. If you haven’t pressed it yet, wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object (like a cast-iron skillet) on top for about 15 minutes. This helps to remove excess moisture. Once pressed, cut the tofu into cubes and set aside.
Step 2: Coat the Tofu
  1. In a gallon-sized bag (or a large bowl to keep things eco-friendly), combine the cubed tofu with cornstarch and garlic powder. Gently shake it around until each cube is evenly coated. This mixture is key for achieving that marvelous crunch.
Step 3: Air Fry the Tofu
  1. Place your coated tofu cubes in the air fryer basket, ensuring they have some space between them — don’t crowd the basket! Set your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) and cook for 5 minutes. After that, give it a gentle shake for even cooking. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes until the tofu has that beautiful golden hue and crispy texture. Keep an eye on them, as cooking times may vary with different air fryer models.
Step 4: Prepare the Asian Sauce
  1. While the tofu is cooking, it’s time to multitask! In a small bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, minced garlic, ginger paste, rice vinegar, and water. This sauce will coat the tofu and elevate it with layers of flavor.
Step 5: Combine Tofu and Sauce
  1. In a medium saucepan over low to medium heat, carefully add the freshly air-fried tofu cubes. Pour the Asian sauce over the tofu and mix well to ensure each piece is nicely coated. Let this simmer for about 2-3 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken and stick to the tofu.
Step 6: Garnish and Serve
  1. You can sprinkle with sesame seeds, diced green onions, or fresh cilantro for an added pop of flavor. Serve over your choice of noodles, rice, or a fresh salad, or simply enjoy it on its own.

Notes

Here are some helpful tips to ensure your air fryer tofu turns out perfectly each time:
- Press the Tofu: Pressing helps remove excess moisture, allowing for a crispier texture.
- Air Flow Matters: Don't overcrowd the air fryer; give the tofu space so it cooks evenly.
- Temperature Control: Keep an eye on the tofu towards the end of cooking to ensure it doesn’t over-brown.
- Experiment with Sauces: Feel free to mix up the flavors by adding chili paste for heat or using different sauces like teriyaki!
- Batch Cook: Make a larger batch for meal prep; air-fried tofu keeps well in the fridge for several days.
